Ian asked:
In the mid 1960's Boro had a South African goalie on their books and he let in a hatful of goals in a match at St James' park. He apparently was never seen again.
What was his name, what was the fixture, the date and the result. I was at the game but I can't remember much at all about it.

That poor keeper was Arthur Lightning, born in Durban, South Africa.
He was, in fact, making his debut for Boro at St James' Park on 29th August 1962, and the result was a 6-1 defeat.
In total he played 18 times for Boro, all in the 1962-63 season, and conceded 43 (forty three) goals. Thats an average of nearly 2.5 per game. He also conceded 6 against Southampton and 4 in his final game against Rotherham.
The story goes that he was allowed home to South Africa for the funeral of his brother and he never returned.

So, Emerson wasn't the first foreigner to go AWOL.

Gordon asked:
Please could you tell me who the 1st Boro player to be sent off at Ayresome Park? If you look in the book A Complete Record by Harry Glasper, it mentions Andy Wilson against Liverpool March 1915, but when you look at the fixtures of that season in question, Andy Wilson didn't play in the game or the previous 3 or 4 games.

According to my records Andy Wilson (full name Andrew Nesbitt Wilson) was the first player sent off at Ayresome Park, not to be confused with Archibald Wilson who also played during the 1914-15 season.
Archibald made his debut on the opening day of the season against Sheffield Wednesday but was missing for several games around the Liverpool game, Andy made his debut on Jan 2 1915 against West Brom and wore George Elliott's no.9 shirt for the game against Liverpool.
Andy went on to become Boro's top scorer for two seasons in the early 1920's.
Incidently Andy was also the second Boro player to be sent off at Ayresome Park, against Tottenham in 1921.

Lee asked:
I was wondering? Could you tell me how many different shirt sponsers mfc have had in there history' and also the sponsers names. I would be really grateful.

Boro have had 10 shirt sponsors, the first in 1980, the full list reads:
Datsun Cleveland - 1980-82
McLean Homes - 1982-84
Camerons - 1984-86 (also included Hansa, which was worn on the away shirt)
Dickens - 1986-88
Heritage Hampers - 1988-90
Evening Gazette - 1990-92
ICI - 1992-94
Dickens (again) - 1994-95
Cellnet/BT Cellnet - 1995-2002
Dial-a-Phone - 2002 to date

Eivind Asked:
I am a Norwegian Boro fan who has a couple of questions for you!
I`m working with a internet page for Norwegian Middlesbrough supporters, you can check it out in a couple of months (think I should have it done by then), the address is: http://www.boro.tk

Where does Hamilton Richard play now? and what happend to him? He was
our topscorer for 2 seasons, and suddently he was out of the team...
Do you know were Gianluca Festa plays now?
Have Boro ever won anything?
When was Middlesbrough founded?

Hamilton Ricard failed to make the first team when Steve McClaren arrived
and was given a free transfer in March 2002.
He signed for CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria where he played in the Bulgarian Cup
Final. He was involved in some sort of player revolt.
This season he moved back to Colombia where he is playing for Independiente
Santa Fe.

Gianluca Festa moved to first division Portsmouth on a free transfer after a short loan period.

Boro have not won a major trophy in their history.
They were FA Cup runners-up in 1997 and League Cup runners-up in 1997 &
1998. Their best finish in the first division is 3rd in 1914. They did win the Amateur Cup in 1895 & 1898.

Middlesbrough were founded in 1876 and joined the Football League in 1899. They were re-formed in 1986 after being in liquidation, the 1986 now appears on their new badge.

Best of luck with the site Eivind.

Geoff asked:
I've always wondered how many games we actualy won with the Little Fella playing.

In total the Little Fella has played 101 times for Boro, 78 in the League and 23 in cup competitions.
In his first spell we won 20 (29.4%), drew 19 (27.9%) and lost 29 (42.6%) while he was playing. In his second spell on loan we won 10 (30.3%), drew 10 (30.3%) and lost 13 (39.4%)

Not very impressive when you look at the stats!!!

Colin asked:

Wasn't there a famous victory over Liverpool in the late 70s?

Boro had a couple of notable victories over Liverpool at Anfield in the
mid-late 70's.
A Willie Maddren goal deep into injury time gave Boro a 1-0 win in the
League Cup of 1974-75, then the following season Boro won 2-0 at Anfield in the League, with goals from Terry Cooper and John Hickton
