UEFA have confirmed that his 'B' sample also tested positive for a banned steroid type drug called Dianabol, which is the trade name for methandrostenolone.
The Portuguese player will plead that he was taking a legal food supplement imported from the United States, and that he did not intend to dope himself, however, he is personally responsible for any substance found in urine samples.
Middlesbrough will be well within their rights to cancel his contract should he be found guilty, in which case he is expected to receive a years ban.
The hearing takes place in Switzerland on Thursday 17th November.
