The Hammers have emerged as favourites for the signature of the 22-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of this month.

Bates had been expected to agree to a move to Wigan Athletic, but the departure of Latics manager Steve Bruce to Wearside could see interest from Sunderland.

It's possible Bates could still end up staying with Boro, though it is understood there is a huge gap between what might be on offer here and what Bates can potentially earn elsewhere.
