Strikers to go under the knife

Massimo Maccarone will have an operation on a troublesome shoulder niggle he has carried since his arrival at the club, while Malcolm Christie will receive treatment for a hernia.

Maccarone's injury has not affected him on the pitch this season but Christie has admitted he has been playing through the pain barrier.

"I've been gritting my teeth and playing through," he said.

"The manager has been very good with me and brought me off when he has seen I've been struggling," he added.

Christie's impressive form since his arrival from Derby in January is all the more remarkable given his injury woes and the 23 year old admitted he has only delayed the surgery because the end of the season is so close.

"If it had happened mid-season I would have had the operation straight away," he said.

Meanwhile Boro have announced they will play Rotherham in a pre-season friendly at Millmoor on Wednesday July 30.
