The 20-year-old is facing a spell on the sidelines after tearing a stomach muscle at Reading on March 5, and the experienced Paul Smith has been drafted in on loan from Nottingham Forest to replace him.
Manager Tony Mowbray said: "We`ve got a very, very talented young goalkeeper in Jason Steele.
"It's his first season, really, and while he has done excellently for the club, he was probably going through his most difficult spell at the time he got injured.
"If there is a blessing in disguise, it's not a bad thing for him to step out of the firing line for a little bit, being such a young goalkeeper in such an intense situation.
"Paul coming in has brought his experience and a different feel to the back four, but regarding moving on in the future, Jason Steele is our number one goalkeeper."
