Southgate in, Ehiogu out

Both players have been a tower of strength for Boro this season and would have made an excellent partnership for England, if required.

Southgate has started the last couple of England games so it comes as no surprise that he is included in Eriksson's 23-man squad, which needs to be confirmed in two weeks time.

Ehiogu has been a fringe player on the international scene of late and his inclusion in the final squad was touch and go. The inclusion of Martin Keown was not expected, that and the return from injury of the versatile Wes Brown has probably scuppered any hopes that he had.

To date Southgate is Boro's only playing representative in the World Cup Finals, although there would be no surprise if Alen Boksic was named in the Croatian squad, after all he will be the freshest player in the finals.

Joseph-Desire Job has been named in Cameroon's preliminary 29-man squad, but after missing out in their Nations Cup squad he will be one of the favourites to miss out again.

Manager Steve McClaren will of course be in Japan and South Korea, as a member of the England coaching staff.

Robbie Stockdale and Allan Johnston are also going to the far east with Scotland but their contribution is in a number of warm-up games and a tounament in Hong Kong.

The full England squad for the World Cup Finals is:
