Mustoe has decided to turn down a one year deal to keep him at the Riverside, a number of clubs have been alerted, none more so than Derby County, who look to be favouites to sign him.
Mustoe joined Boro 12 years ago from Oxford United in a £375,000 deal negotiated by Colin Todd. He clocked up over 450 appearances in total and scored a surprising 45 goals.
Boro chairman Steve Gibson said "Robbie is a model professional and I wish every player we brought to the club had his attitude and professionalism - it would make everyone’s life an awful lot easier. He is perhaps, in the time I’ve been here, one of the most underestimated players. He has talent as well as commitment, we are very proud to have had Robbie Mustoe at the club for the last ten years."
Boss Steve McClaren joined the chairman's accolade by saying "I can’t speak highly enough of Robbie, not just as a player, but also as a person off the field.
He has been absolutely magnificent over the years for Middlesbrough, he was great for us last year, his performances were tremendous. He’ll be sadly missed, but we wish him well."
He has been through the good and the bad times with Boro throughout the ninties and into the new century, the highlights undoubtedly being three Wembley appearances. He had a well earned testimonial in 2000.
He was not the most gifted player but he always gave 110% and was the main driving force in the 'engine room' throughout his Boro career. I'm sure all Boro fans will join me in wishing him well in his remaining career. Good luck Robbie Mustoe.
