White Books were introduced back in the 1997/98 season when Boro had a season ticket 'sell out'. They were issued to fans in areas of the ground where the club could not guarentee fans tickets for cup games, due to the ticket allocation for away fans, primarily the south stand and south east corner.
Since that season all new season ticket holders have been given White Books, so now there is a mixture of Red Book and White Book holders all around the stadium.
The days of season ticket 'sell outs' have gone and we are down to a core of approximately 22,000 season ticket holders, of which 16,000 are Red Book holders and 6,000 are White Book holders.
So, currently there is no problem supplying tickets to every season ticket holder for big cup games at the Riverside, afterall not every season ticket holder takes up their ticket for these games, as we have seen this season.
The club have given Red Book holders preference over White Book holders on a number of occasions this season but at the end of the day, red or white, they are all season ticket holders.
Supposedly, the club can tell which fans have had season tickets since the Riverside opened, and before, by the unique Patron No. issued with each ticket, i.e. S1050 where the S signifies the year that the ticket was first purchased.
The Red Book, White Book situation can cause difficulties in purchasing groups of tickets when several fans, who would like to sit together, cannot purchase the tickets at the same time.
There also remains the problem of allocating tickets for away games where the ticket allocation is significantly less than the number of season ticket holders wanting to travel, although I am sure that the club will confirm that there has been only one or two games when there has been no tickets available for general sale.
There are numerous ideas that the club could adopt when allocating tickets for away games but that's an argument for another day.
From a personal point of view I am in favour of upgrading White Books to Red Books since I have one of each, for myself and my son, who has only just started enjoying the Riverside experience, and the awayday experience.
I say vote YES!
