The central midfielder, who currently plies his trade in Italy with Udinese, has been linked with a host of clubs during the summer including Tottenham, West Ham and Racing Santander in Spain.
And according to Jaime Ladjemi, Helgueras advisor, the 26 year old was close to signing for North East rivals Newcastle before they completed the signing of Hugo Viana.
And now according Ladjemi, he could be on his way to the Riverside.
"Middlesbrough's interest is now big again. He may very well move there for a couple of days next week."
Its well known that Boro are in the market for a central midfielder after the departures of Paul Ince and Robbie Mustoe and have recently been linked with moves for George Boateng and Matt Holland.
