He is on trial at German Second Division club Fortuna Dusseldorf in the hope of securing a move once the transfer window opens at the start of next month.
Dusseldorf officials have been impressed with Emnes' performance and have expressed a desire to take the winger on a season-long loan.
Boro boss Gordon Strachan has informed the 21-year-old he does not form part of his plans for next season, and is not expected to include Emnes in the squad that will travel to La Manga for a weeklong training camp on Saturday.
However, the Middlesbrough hierarchy will resist any offer of a loan deal in the hope of recouping a significant proportion of the £3.2m they shelled out to sign the Dutchman from Sparta Rotterdam.
Emnes has failed to live up to his reputation since leaving Holland two years ago, making just 31 league appearances over the course of two seasons.
His most recent league start came last October, but his youth and experience with Holland's Under-21 side make him a valuable asset.
As a result, Boro will be unwilling to let him leave for nothing on either a temporary or permanent basis.
Any money raised from Emnes' departure would be added to Strachan's summer fighting fund, and the Boro boss has already targeted a number of prospective signings.
Rochdale defender Craig Dawson features prominently on the list, and Boro officials are already understood to have made contact with their counterparts at Spotland.
Rochdale are hoping to receive a down payment of £750,000 for Dawson's services, potentially rising as high as £2m, and Boro confident of seeing off competition from Premier League clubs Tottenham and Fulham to sign one of the most highlyrated players in the lower divisions.
Two Championship players have also emerged as targets, with Boro eyeing deals for Crystal Palace midfielder Darren Ambrose and Swansea playmaker Leon Britton.
But Strachan will face a fight to land either in the next few weeks.
Ambrose claimed 15 goals and seven assists this season, but Crystal Palace's financial problems mean he is almost certain to leave Selhurst Park this summer.
He is likely to command a seven-figure fee though, and sources in Scotland claim Celtic boss Neil Lennon is interested in securing his services.
QPR boss Neil Warnock is also expected to approach a player he worked closely with during his time as Palace manager.
Britton would be a cheaper option as he is due to become a free agent next month, but Wigan Athletic have expressed an interest and would be able to offer the 27-year-old a place in the Premier League next season.
Mido is also hoping to retain a role in the top-flight, and neither the Egyptian nor fellow loanee Didier Digard will be part of the Boro party that flies to Spain this weekend.
The pair's loan deals with West Ham and Nice respectively do not officially expire until the end of June, and neither will train with Boro until the start of July at the earliest.
