The Australian international faces a fitness test before the match with Barnsley.
The £3.2m signing was put under question by former Celtic striker Charlie Nicholas this weekend.
When asked if McDonald had made the right move in the January transfer window, Nicholas said: "He hasn't been a first-team regular under Tony Mowbray and he has looked a bit out of sorts.
"We certainly didn't see the passion and work-ethic that we come to expect from him and that is a big part of his game.
"But he won't be as prolific in the Championship because he won't get the chances he used to get playing for Celtic.
"In the Scottish league he could expect TEN chances a game, and he won't get that in the Championship."
