Boro chairman Steve Gibson has made his intentions clear, that he wants Southgate to take charge, but the Boro supremo has met with resistance from the League Managers Association (LMA) and the Premier League.
The LMA will attempt to block Southgate's appointment because of his lack of UEFA coaching badges, but it's not the first time managers have been appointed who have lacked the relevant badges.
Glenn Roeder was recently appointed manager at Newcastle after a short spell as caretaker, but only after chairman Freddie Shepherd gained approval from the other Premier League chairmen.
Chris Coleman was also short of his UEFA badges when he was appointed at Fulham in 2003.
