Downing won his 6th cap as he made his first start for England last night at Old Trafford against European champions Greece. He had an impressive first half, being involved in three of England's four goals.
A header back into the box for John Terry to score the first, after the Greek keeper made a poor clearance. He missed out on the second goal set up by Steven Gerrard for Frank Lampard to score with a deflected shot.
A low cross from the left was not cleared and Frank Lampard had a shot saved by the Greek keeper but Peter Crouch was on had to toe poke the rebound into the net.
And finally, another inch perfect cross from the left for Crouch to score his second and England's fourth in an exciting first half.
Sadly the second half never got going and when Downing headed straight for the tunnel after being substituted every Boro fan's thoughts turned to Saturday. Hopefully a precautionary ice-pack will put things right, but an injury to the Boro winger will put a dampener on a decent England display.
