Boro's reward from having the best defensive record in the Premiership is international recognition for the two central defenders. It was expected that Southgate would be called up but Ehiogu's inclusion will be a surprise to many around the country.

The pair will compete with Sol Campbell and Jonathan Woodgate for the matches against Slovakia next Saturday and Macedonia a week on Wednesday. Ehiogu replaces Rio Ferdinand, from Sven Goran Eriksson's last squad, after it was revealed the Man. United star needs an exploratory knee operation.
