Kris Boyd marked his debut with a goal as Middlesbrough began their tour of Ireland with a 1-1 draw against Athlone. Boyd, along with Kevin Thomson and Nicky Bailey, was one of three new summer signings on parade.

The former Rangers striker put Boro ahead after 73 minutes after Luke Williams picked him out on the edge of the six-yard box. However, the lead last just three minutes as Austin Skelly beat Brad Jones with a low shot. Leroy Lita had a chance to win the game late on but his effort was saved.

Peterborough 2-3 Aston Villa

Peterborough impressed in their latest pre-season outing against Aston Villa but could not stop the Premier League side recording a 3-2 victory at London Road.

Ashley Young gave Villa the lead after 10 minutes with a superbly-weighted chip over goalkeeper Joe Lewis but Posh hit back immediately through Aaron Davies, who beat two defenders before driving the ball past Brad Friedel. Friedel made a fantastic save midway through the first half, pushing Grant McCann`s 25-yard shot away before James Collins somehow prevented Aaron Mclean from converting the rebound.

Villa got their noses in front again on the stroke of half-time when John Carew flicked a low cross in off the far post. Lewis made a fine fingertip save to thwart Stewart Downing early in the second half but there was little the Posh keeper could do to stop Eric Lichaj from extending Villa`s lead with a powerful header. Charlie Lee made it 3-2 with a deflected effort following a sharp turn and shot. Dave Hibbert, Craig Mackail-Smith and Kelvin Langmead threatened for Posh late on but the League One side could not find the equaliser.

Southend 1-1 Derby County

Southend came from behind to grab a 1-1 friendly draw with Derby County.

On Saturday at Burton, County's Kris Commons delivered an inch-perfect free-kick for Dean Leacock to head home, and the Scotland international did it again at Roots Hall as Rob Hulse's bullet header gave the Rams the lead after 10 minutes.

Hulse could have quickly extended Derby`s lead but he was thwarted by the Southend keeper when through one-on-one.John Brayford clipped the top of the crossbar with a header just before the break as the Championship club threatened once more.

But it was Southend who struck the next decisive blow when Anthony Grant was adjudged to have been fouled inside the area by Luke Varney. Matt Paterson converted the resulting penalty.Derby used 24 players, fielding entirely different sides in each half. Southend used 16 players - only two of which were at the club last season.

Tiverton Town 0-8 Torquay

Billy Kee stole the show with five goals as Torquay thrashed Southern League outfit Tiverton Town 8-0. The 19-year-old striker, who joined the Gulls on a two-year deal this summer following his release by Leicester, hit all his goals in the first half. He had notched his hat-trick after just 18 minutes after opening the scoring with a 25-yard strike in the seventh minute. Chris Zebroski also scored before the break as Paul Buckle`s side went into half-time with a 6-0 advantage. Substitutes Ashley Yeoman and Danny Stevens added further goals in the second half.
