Derek Whyte (talking to The Sun): “Boro needed an experienced manager and they have got that in Gordon.
“He did superbly at Celtic. His record is second to none, especially taking the club to the last 16 of the Champions League for two years running.
“Steve Gibson knows that Boro cannot afford to stay out of the top flight longer than a year. He also needs to get attendances up as well.
“I think Gordon will do that. It won't be easy with Newcastle and West Brom having so much clout, but I think Boro and Newcastle will go up.
“It will be a life-changing move for Gordon because even though Middlesbrough is a football-mad town, the club and the place are different from Celtic.
“Gordon could not even go to the cinema or for a meal in Glasgow, without someone - either Rangers or Celtic fans - saying something.
“He used to go out with a hat on to shop in Glasgow to avoid being recognised. That's the way it is in Glasgow, things can get out of control with some punters.
“It's why I enjoyed Middlesbrough for seven years.”
