Boyd deserves top flight - Robson

Peterborough's record appearance holder Tommy Robson thinks George Boyd should hold out for a move to the Premier League and not join Middlesbrough.Director of football Barry Fry has confirmed the clubs are in contact over a potential deal for the midfielder.

Robson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I would say to George hold off and try and get a Premier League side straight from here if you want to go.

"It would be a great loss for the club and especially for the supporters."

Boyd signed for Posh in a non-league record deal of £250,000 in January 2007 and played a vital part in back-to-back promotions from League Two and League One.

Fry told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph that the club rebuffed interest from Middlesbrough in January: "They made a bid which was rejected by the chairman [Darragh MacAnthony] because he wanted to keep all his best players to give us the best chance of avoiding relegation.

If we wait until Boyd's contract runs out in a year's time we'll get nothing for him so I think it makes sense to cash in now along with CMS and Mclean

"The chairman could have cashed in, but he didn't because he believes in backing his manager. George was informed of the interest and he was happy to stay and play for us.

"We are still in touch with Middlesbrough about him, but I'd be surprised if he left while it is still mathematically possible for us to stay up."

Fry also confirmed Boyd has made it clear that he will not be signing an extension to his contract at London Road.

The 24-year-old, who has played for England C and Scotland B, has 18 months remaining on his current deal and Robson admits it will the end of an era should he choose to leave.

"This team has been built up from scratch with non-league players and has won two promotions one after another," he said.

"I think people felt if the side could stay together we could go places, but that could be about to change."
