Middlesbrough's recently launched appeal with former player Gary Smith to reclaim compensation paid to former Manchester United youngster Ben Collett has been denied.
Collett was left badly injured after a tackle from Smith during a reserve match in 2003. The challenge left Collett with his leg broken in two places.
The awarded damages received by Collett amounted to around £3 million, a relatively small sum when one considers the premature end to the former footballer's career.
