Keith Lamb: "I think Gareth Southgate would acknowledge that if we made a mistake last year it was we didn't have enough older players in the squad.

"We relied a little too much on youth and perhaps we got found out in the end.

"We are quite clear on what we need to do.

"We have identified the players we want and we have already opened discussions with some clubs.

"It's very early days yet and I honestly can't see anything happening before the end of this month, because chairmen and managers at most clubs are now on holiday.

"But Gareth has his list of targets and everybody at Middlesbrough is agreed on the way forward.

"The squad needs refreshing. I think everybody accepts you need a squad to get you out of the Championship and another team to keep you in the Premier League. The gap is that wide."
