Boro were booed following a demoralising 3-0 home defeat by Blackpool on Tuesday, and the town needs something to lift the gloom.
Crowds are also markedly down at the Riverside to below 20,000, with barely 17,000 home fans in the ground on Tuesday.
Craig Hignett (talking to the Express): “There is a feeling of despondency around the town with what has happened at Corus and Boro are taking one step forward and two steps back right now.
“But they’ve got the right man in Gordon - an experienced, successful manager who has a fantastic record at all the clubs he has managed. He needs time to put it right and I’m sure he will be given it because he’s a terrific manager.
“It’s odd though because away from home this season they’ve been excellent. The 5-1 win at QPR suggested they’d turned a corner. For whatever reason, they have not been able to achieve the same level of performance at home. Why, I just don’t know.
“Obviously you should feel more comfortable at home because the surroundings are so familiar, so it is still a mystery.”
