Boro are aware of interest in the centre-back, who has played many of his matches this season as a central midfielder, and hope to agree new terms soon.
Bates, though, is prepared to wait until the summer before deciding his next move.
Bates: "There have been talks, the club (Middlesbrough) has made contact. But I'm just pleased to be playing again after all my injury troubles. I don't want any distractions and I just want to keep playing until the end of the season."
