The 21-year-old will have an operation at the weekend to stabilise the ankle he injured on Tuesday playing for the reserves.
An assessment will be made in six-to-eight weeks' time when a decision will be made on whether or not further surgery is required.
He was an unused substitute for Sunday's 1-0 home defeat by Cardiff.
A club statement said: "He [Hines] will have his first operation at Woodlands Hospital in Darlington on Saturday to stabilise the ankle. The injury will be reviewed in six-to-eight weeks' time with the possibility of a further operation."
