But while skipper Gary O'Neil was left to reflect upon the chances which went begging at St James' Park, he was honest in his assessment of the two clubs.
Gary O'Neil: "They [Newcastle] are good at everything we are not at the moment. They are very good at attacking that end and decent at keeping clean sheets.
"We seem to be better than them in the middle and miles worse at either end, so we need to address the situation.
"I am sure the gaffer is fully aware of what we need to do, but obviously we are getting a little bit short on time."
