Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates is backing chairman Steve Gibson to make the right decision as he looks for Gordon Strachan's successor. The 23-year-old Academy graduate insists Gibson must take his time to get the right man. He told the club's official website: "It's important that the chairman makes the right decision and speaks to managers and sees what he feels they have to offer. "There's no rush. It's still early in the season, he can take a couple of weeks to think about it, and I'm sure Steve Gibson will make the right decision." Tony Mowbray remains the fans' favourite, but another Boro old boy, Nigel Pearson, who is currently in charge at Hull, also has popular support on Teesside.
