The 30-year-old's contract runs out at the end of the season, but he has expressed his desire to stay at the Riverside Stadium.
"It is a very important time for me in my career," he told Gazette Live.
"I hope I can play in most of the games and I hope that I play well.
"I would like to stay at Middlesbrough, so I have to continue to play well and show the manager what I can do.
"I know that I will have to take a pay cut if I am staying. But I will have to see what happens in the summer."
