The 37-year-old was given the captains armband as he was drafted in to cover for Ugo Ehiogu, who failed to make the game because of a back injury. Chris Riggott continued to deputise for Gareth Southgate who failed to recover from a knee injury. Both Franck Queudrue and Michael Reiziger recovered to play in the back four.
There were no other changes in the starting line-up, however Massimo Maccarone was preferred to England U-21 youngster Stewart Downing on the bench.
